Tutors are needed at the Lakeridge Junior High Learning Enrichment Center in Orem to give students educational assistance.

"Teachers can't give the specialized one-to-one attention that so many of these youths need," said David Gullino, Learning Enrichment Supervisor. "Most of the students would be struggling on their own to understand concepts without the help of our tutors."Students are referred to the Learning Enrichment Center by their teachers for either a special project or for more frequent help.

Tutors will help seventh- through ninth- graders in such core subjects as math, reading, English, history and science. Volunteers will assist with various homework and study problems. Tutors need no experience to serve at the learning center.

Recently, because of demand, the learning center extended its hours before and after school. Volunteer tutors are needed between 7:15 a.m. and 4 p.m. Participants are asked to commit to working with the students for one hour per week.

Other volunteer opportunities are available throughout Utah County, some of which are listed below.

- Provide Thanksgiving dinner for a needy family. The Community Action Regional Food Bank needs individuals, families, neighborhoods and church groups to join together in gathering food to help less-fortunate families enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner. Volunteers may donate Thanksgiving dinner baskets filled with nonperishable food items or a grocery store gift certificate worth the price of a turkey (about $10). These items can be donated directly to the Food Bank.

- Give support to abused children. The Family Support and Treatment Center in Orem is searching for volunteers to work and play with children. The Center provides a place for children up to age 11 to stay when abuse has occurred or to prevent abusive situations. Volunteers read to, play with, and teach arts and crafts to the children at the center. Help is also needed to help clean the nursery and sanitize toys.

- Help paint homes for families in need. Neighborhood Housing Services of Provo is in need of volunteers to paint the interior of homes. This service will enable NHSP to lower the price of a home for families who require assistance to purchase.
