At a weekend convention of Teamsters reform activists, three men often mentioned as successors to embattled union President Ron Carey tried to impress delegates without looking like candidates.

None wanted to appear to be usurping Carey's mantel, although Carey himself acknowledged that a new candidate may need to carry the reform banner now that he has been disqualified for an illegal fund-raising scheme. All three stuck to a message that Carey himself embraced: The movement to open up the 1.4 million-member union to greater rank-and-file control will continue no matter who is president.
