In an apparent signal of a warming trend, high-level talks between North Korea and the United States are being held for the first time at the State Department.

Announcement of Wednesday's meeting followed an agreement last Friday among the United States, China and the two Koreas to begin negotiation on a peace treaty for the Korean Peninsula.Leading the respective delegations for Wednesday's meeting were U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary Charles Kartman and North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Gye Gwan.

On the agenda were such issues as missile proliferation, the opening of diplomatic offices in each other's capitals and American servicemen still missing and presumed dead from the Korean War.
