Ben Chimato Oshita passed away on Nov. 24, 1997 at home in Salt Lake City from Leukemia.
He was born October 26, 1916 in Grafton, CA. to Issaku and Isao Shinde Oshita. His youth included farm life in Elk Grove and high school in Woodland, CA. World War II brought interment at Tule Lake and Jerome relocation camps. He served with the US Army Military Intelligence Service in the Philippines and Japan. After the war, he moved with his family to Salt Lake City where he married Grace Fujimoto on Sept. 18, 1949. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1950 with a BS degree in Pharmacy. He had a 32 year pharmacy career with Skaggs Drug Centers retiring as Pharmacy Manager.
He was a member of Salt Lake JACL, Japanese Church of Christ, Horshima Kenjinkai, American and Utah Pharmaceutical Associations, American Legion, Salt Lake Buddhist Temple.Special thanks to Anna C. Beck, MD and Alfred H. Hamba, MD.
Surviving family include: wife, Grace; son, Allen (Anne) Hillsborough, CA; daughter, Lynne (Richard) Doi, Salt Lake City; four grandchildren; sisters, Emiko Oshita of Salt Lake City; Haruko (William) Shimanoto of El Cerrito, CA; sisters-in-law, Sarah Oshita of Mobile, AL; and Louise Oshita of Salt Lake City. He is preceded in death by brothers, William, Albert, and sister, Fumiko (Yoshio) Usui.
Funeral services will be held Sat., Nov. 29, 1997 15 11 a.m. at the Japanese Church of Christ, 268 W. 100 So., Salt Lake City. Interment will follow at Salt Lake City Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10-11 a.m. prior to service. Funeral directors: Deseret Memorial Mortuary.
