FASSEL'S WEEKEND: With his New York Giants off this week, coach Jim Fassel spent the weekend in Big Sky country.

His son John Fassel, a reserve quarterback for Weber State, completed 6-of-17 passes for 114 yards in the second half with one touchdown and one interception Saturday in the Wildcats' 28-14 loss to Montana State.

SPLIT DECISION: After months of speculation, Colin Montgomerie has decided to split his time next year between the PGA Tour and the PGA European Tour.

In a statement released early Mon-day, Montgomerie, who won a record fifth consecutive PGA European Tour money title Sunday, said he didn't want to leave Europe full-time and commit himself to the PGA Tour.

YANKS DROP BOGGS, GOODEN: The New York Yankees declined options on third baseman Wade Boggs and pitcher Dwight Gooden. The moves cost $400,000 in buyouts and saved $5 million in salaries.

Auto racing

DURA-LUBE 500: Dale Jarrett won the Dura-Lube 500 in Phoenix Sunday, tightening up the Winston Cup championship.

Jarrett leapfrogged Mark Martin into second in points standings, trailing leader Jeff Gordon by 77 with only the season finale remaining. Martin finished sixth, moving within 87 points.

Tennis

PARIS OPEN: Top-ranked Pete Sampras defeated Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the Paris Open finals, his seventh title this year and 51st of his career.

KREMLIN CUP: In Moscow, top-seeded Jana Novotna beat Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 6-4 in the Kremlin Cup finals, the 18th career title for the 29-year-old Czech, worth $150,000.

The doubles final ended abruptly in the first set when Caroline Vis of the Netherlands cursed the umpire, who then disqualified her and partner Yayuk Basuki of Indonesia. The victory was awarded to Spain's Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Natasha Zvereva of Belarus.

NATIONS CUP: At Gelsenkirchen, Germany, three-time world champion Elvis Stojko's long program won the Nations Cup figure skating title.

German pairs world champions Mandy Woetzel and Ingo Steuer also won.

German Tanja Szewczenko came back from a long illness to win the women's final, and Russian couple Anjelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsyan-ni-kov achieved perfection with three 6.0s for original dance.
