Police have confirmed that a shooting aboard a Greyhound bus Saturday was suicide.

Aquilino Sorto, 40, was despondent and shot himself with a .45 caliber handgun while riding a Greyhound bus near Parley's Summit about 5:15 p.m., said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Jerry Townsend.Sorto, who was sitting with his cousin, Felicito Sorto Rodas, 44, shot himself in the chest, Townsend said. The bullet went through the man and lodged in the seat. A metal plate prevented the bullet from striking a woman sitting behind him.

Both men boarded the bus in Des Moines, Iowa, and were headed back to their native Honduras, Townsend said.

After the shooting, the driver continued out of the canyon, pulled into a Chevron gas station near 2300 South and Foothill Drive and called police.
