A woman was killed early Sunday after a nightlong war of words between two groups of partygoers erupted into gunfire.

Debbie Jean Jones, 20, died when a bullet fired by someone in the street outside her house struck her left arm and ricocheted into her abdomen.People attending a party at the Jones residence, 2076 Jefferson St., had feuded with partygoers at a home across the street most of Saturday night, Ogden Police Lt. Scott Sangberg said.

"There had been an altercation between the two groups earlier in the evening with a lot of name calling and yelling," he said.

The conflict continued to smolder through the night - though not as loudly - until about 3:15 a.m., when someone fired several shots from a handgun into Jones' home.

One bullet went through the front door and hit Jones, who was standing just inside the doorway. She was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Sangberg said investigators had not determined Sunday whether the shooter fired from inside a vehicle or while standing outside. It was also not clear whether the assailant shot at someone in particular or simply targeted the house.

The neighborhood was in "general chaos," and the suspects were gone when police arrived on the scene, Sangberg said. "There were large crowds and a lot of people running from the area."

Later Sunday, police questioned three people and searched a residence in connection with the homicide.

Detective said Monday there were several "strong suspects" but no arrests had been made.

The shooting details were being sorted Monday.
