Utah State University will host a conference to introduce middle and high school girls to math and science-related careers on Saturday, Nov. 8.

The event, sponsored by USU's College of Science and the Utah Math/Science Network, also is open to parents of young women.Registration for Expanding Your Horizons will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is $14 per person, which includes lunch, workshop materials and a conference T-shirt. To register, call (435) 797-2176.

Jayceen Craven-Nicholson, volunteer coordinator for the Hansen Planetarium, will provide the keynote presentation - a light show that demonstrates fun with physics.

Other workshops include a simulated space rescue mission, learning what veterinarians look for when examining the family dog and using M&Ms candy to teach math and statistics.

"We want young women to understand that change is a big part of life, and it's important to be prepared in a field you will enjoy whether you plan to have a career or not," said conference chairwoman Sue Morgan.
