HONORS: BYU junior forward Shauna Rohbock was named co-MVP for the WAC's Pacific Division, and Utah's Amy Freeman Winslow earned the division's coach-of-the-year honor as the conference announced its post-season awards Tuesday.

Rohbock, who led the WAC in points last year with 79, is second this season with 34 - 14 goals and six assists. Her nine points in WAC games was good for third-place honors.

Freeman Winslow led the Utes to a 3-2 conference record, a tie for second in the Pacific Division standings and an appearance in the 1997 WAC tournament. She guided the Utes to a win over San Diego State during the season, with the Aztecs being a WAC championship finalist for the past two seasons.

BYU placed four players on the all-WAC Pacific Division's first team - joining Rohbock were sophomore midfielder Maren Hendershot, junior midfielder Michelle Jensen and freshman forward/midfielder Sara Reading. BYU's Laurel Simpson, a junior sweeper, was a second-team selection.

Utah's Staci Burt, a sophomore forward, was a first-team honoree. Three teammates were named to the second team: junior forward Dominique Barcellona, sophomore defender/midfielder Karen Board-man and freshman forward Lorrie Tipton.

WAC TOURNAMENT: The 1997 WAC women's soccer tournament kicks off Wednesday in Dallas, with BYU set to defend its title in the eight-team, single-elimination format.

Seeded No. 1 from the Pacific Division, the Cougars (17-2-0 overall, 5-1-0 in the WAC) has five players who have scored 20 or more points. BYU meets TCU Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Utah (10-9, 3-2) faces Tulsa in the following game at 4:30 p.m.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: BYU's double team of Adrien Jenkins and Eline Chiew won the doubles championship title at the Rolex Regional Championship Monday in Omaha.

The win qualifies them to compete in doubles at the National

Indoor Championships in February.

GYMNASTICS CENTER: Construction has begun on the university's Gymnastics Training Center.

It is Utah's first stand-alone athletics facility built specifically for a women's sports team. The training center will be just off the northeast corner of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) complex.

The $1.9 million facility, made possible in part by a $750,000 gift by the Katherine and Zeke Dumke Jr. family, is scheduled for a completion date of July 1, 1998. Designed by AJC Architects of Salt Lake City, the center is being built by Fox Construction.

FOOTBALL: Defensive end Ben Crosland was named the Big West defensive player of the week, and Steve Smith claimed special teams accolades.

Crosland, a senior from Kem-mer-er, Wyo., was named for the second time this season for his efforts in Utah State's 24-20 win against Boise State. Crosland recorded 11 total tackles (seven unassisted), including four tackles for loss and one sack.

Smith, a senior from Belle Glade, Fla., was also named for the second time this year. Smith returned two punts for 14 yards and four kickoffs for 96 yards. He also intercepted a pass on a Boise State fake punt attempt and returned it 13 yards.
