The Salt Lake City School District will offer free breakfasts to schoolchildren Thursday in honor of State Breakfast Day.

Families are welcome to eat with their students for $1.50 for adults and 70 cents for children. Breakfast will be offered in school cafeterias. Contact schools for breakfast times.The school district, which began offering breakfast 12 years ago to 75 students, now serves 5,000 morning meals daily.

Studies show an increase in test scores and concentration levels, low absenteeism and diminished restlessness in children who eat breakfast before class.

Nearly 60 percent of Utah schools participated in the breakfast program last year, according to Utahns Against Hunger. The Salt Lake City and Davis school districts were among six with 100 percent of its schools serving breakfasts.
