Two teens were killed and three injured after the car they were riding in rolled at least 60 feet after veering off I-215 Monday night.
Killed were:Mahealane Heimyli, 19, 7636 S. 2550 West, West Jordan.
Tio Vatuvei, 14, 1258 W. Glendale Street, Salt Lake City.
Heimyli was driving south about 8 p.m. near 3500 South in the center lane when she got into the lane on the right side of the van and tried to pass it, said Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Verdi White II. She apparently lost control and bumped the van. The collision sent the car off the side of the freeway and down an embankment.
The car slammed into a sound wall some 60 feet away, White said. While it rolled, one of the wheels flew off, traveled across the freeway and the median and hit a car traveling north, White said. No one was injured in that crash, and there was only minor damage to the third car.
The driver of the van that Heimyli's car bumped, Cory Jackson, 33, 435 S. 800 East, Bountiful, was not hurt in the crash.
Heimyli and Vatuvei were both ejected from the rolling car and pronounced dead at the scene.
Uona Vatuvei, 13, 1258 W. Glendale Street, was also ejected and transported to Pioneer Valley Hospital. Vatuvei, who suffered a leg laceration and cervical strain was treated and released Monday night.
Twin sisters Rachel and Cindy Maumau, 14, 644 S. Pueblo Street, were also in the car but were not ejected. Both were treated for minor injuries at the hospital and released.
Investigators believe the car was traveling at a high speed. None of the passengers was wearing a seat belt. No one was ticketed in the accident as the investigation is on-going.
Because of freeway reconstruction, I-215 was repainted and is now four lanes wide, although those lanes are slightly narrower than before. The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for more than three hours due to the accident.
