STOCKHOLM OPEN: Second-seeded Greg Rusedski of Britain overcame the flu and Swedish wild-card Nicklas Kulti 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in the opening round of the Stockholm Open.
Rusedski clinched a spot in next week's eight-man field of the ATP Tour World Championships.
Earlier, fifth-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria defeated Norway's Christian Ruud 6-3, 6-1; eighth-seeded Tim Henman of Britain outlasted qualifier David Wheaton 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (10-8); France's Cedric Pioline downed Richey Reneberg 6-4, 6-4; France's Lionel Roux topped Spain's Alberto Berasategui 6-2, 6-2, and Australian qualifier Michael Tebbut upset sixth-seeded Alex Corretja of Spain 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, eliminating Corretja from the World Championships.
AMERITECH CUP: Serena Williams, 16-year-old sister of Venus, upset Russian Elena Likhovtseva 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the Ameritech Cup in Chicago.
In earlier play, France's Nathalie Tauziat outlasted Romanian Ruxandra Dragomir 6-3, 5-7, 6-2; Belgian Laurence Courtois overcame French qualifier Amelie Mauresmo 5-7, 7-6, 6-4, and Amy Frazier downed Canadian qualifier Jana Nejegly 6-3, 6-3.
