A 7-month-old South Jordan girl spent a night in the hospital after being bitten by the family dog.
The child, who has not been identified, was in fair condition Tuesday after being treated for a single bite and a few cuts."The one bite required a single stitch," said Bonnie Midget of Primary Children's Medical Center.
South Jordan police said the Rottweiler somehow got into the house at 9780 S. 1160 West about 8:20 a.m. Monday and bit the child.
"I don't know if I would call it an attack," said South Jordan Police Lt. Lindsay Shepherd. "The baby was on the floor and the dog may have just been playing."
The child's father was home at the time but apparently did not have a phone, so he ran to a neighbor home to call paramedics.
"They came in my house to call 911 and the baby looked like it was in shock. We didn't know how extensive the injuries were,' said the neighbor, Anita Grover. "We just tried to keep her comfortable until help arrived."
Grover said the baby lost consciousness as soon as the paramedics reached her home.
The child was taken to Jordan Valley Hospital and later transferred to Primary Children's Medical Center.
The dog, who had only been with the family for a few days, was taken to a local animal shelter and destroyed.
Shepherd said the large dog was gentle with animal handlers, adding it probably would have been hard for the family to recognize any danger.
Bringing a new pet into a home with young children can work fine, said Shepherd. Just keep a close eye on how animals and kids interact.
"People just need to get to know a new animal," Shepherd said.
