On a promise of controlled growth and a greater voice for Pleasant Grove citizens, members of the Action Party booted out incumbent mayoral and City Council candidates in Tuesday's election.
Ed Sanderson, who criticized development of the city's Block 4 RDA, defeated incumbent Mayor Lloyd Ash, 1,277 to 921. About 25 percent of registered voters in Pleasant Grove turned out at the polls."We really planned and worked as a team and were able to do what we wanted to do," Sanderson said. "We clean-swept them."
The new mayor will focus immediately on returning pride and self-esteem to city employees.
"Not that it hasn't been good," he said, but people want a greater voice.
"Our main goal is to listen to the people," Sanderson said. "We follow that by looking to the future."
BYU physicist Freeman Andersen and dental assistant Betty Memmott beat out incumbent Glen Haynie and challenger Ted Milner for four-year seats.
Seminary teacher Lewis Church, with 1,206 votes, and retired dental assistant Carol Harmer, who earned 1,508 votes, won two-year seats by topping Kevin Heiner, 588 votes; Boyd Draper, 765; and Richard Hansen, 360.
The Action Party team is committed to several projects that outgoing Mayor Ash currently has under way: development projects on 700 South where Pen and Ink is opening a business, the push for a freeway offramp on the city's southwest side and concerns about traffic signals at 1100 North and 100 East and at State Street and 1300 West.
"We hope we'll be able to finish up the projects he's worked so hard to get," Sanderson said.
