Mayor Sandra N. Lloyd won a second term at the helm of this growing city after a hotly contested race with retired businessman Don L. Beckstead.

Lloyd, who came in second in the primary, received 2,399 votes to Beckstead's 1,314.Her platform emphasized planning for the future with particular emphasis on pacing and controlling the residential and commercial growth that many residents think is certain to continue.

Lloyd also strongly supports using the former Riverton Elementary School, which the city bought from the Jordan School District, as a community center. Beckstead opposed keeping the building and wanted the surrounding eight acres sold for commercial development.

Lloyd also was open with the media and answered all questions asked of her during the campaign while Beckstead refused to respond to repeated requests for an interview with the Deseret News.

Beckstead was upset about an anonymous flier sent through the mail attempting to link him to the Ku Klux Klan. He denied any involvement with hate organizations, and his supporters hinted that Lloyd was behind the mailings. However, she vehemently denied she knew anything about the materials and condemned such smear tactics.

"I'm very pleased," Lloyd said about the general election results on Tuesday night. "I feel residents in this community know I have the interests of the people at heart, and I would never make any decision that I did not feel was for the best for the community. At this moment, I am so very proud that I live in Riverton and equally as proud to serve as Riverton's mayor."

There will be little change on the City Council - political newcomer Cherri White, a wife and mother, was elected to a two-year term over Adam Bass, 18, a University of Utah student.

Incumbent City Councilmen Galen K. Mills and Steve L. Brooks each won another four-year term in a race with political newcomers Michael L. Orr and Joel Miller.
