Longtime public servant Dix Holt McMullin trounced his opponent for South Jordan's top job Tuesday.

McMullin's 2,497 votes were almost four times as many as those cast for political newcomer Roy Harward. The former state lawmaker and city councilman takes over longtime Mayor Theron Hutchings' seat. Hutchings did not seek re-election.

McMullin, a retired educator, served in the state House of Representatives and the Utah State Senate.

During the race, he campaigned for increasing commercial development to help South Jordan's tax base.

He said his experience and a dedicated group of campaign volunteers made the difference in the race.

"People were very supportive," McMullin said.

McMullin hopes his administration will focus on long-range planning for wetlands and expand the city's parks and recreational facilities.
