Two-term Mayor Marie Huff, who set a standard for having an open-door policy, found the door shut on her Tuesday as she tried to seek a third term.
Huff, who at 83 is the state's oldest mayor, lost to challenger Dale R. Barney as the majority of voters turned their support to him. The final tally for Barney was 1,625 votes to 1,477 for Huff, according to complete but unofficial results. Barney beat her in the primary as well, but she vowed to come back by campaigning harder.Barney said during his campaign he intended to involve residents in local government. He believes in committees to help make major decisions.
The other incumbent kicked out of his seat was Matt Barber, appointed last year to fill out the unexpired term of Jack W. Leifson. That race was for a two-year seat. He lost to incumbent Thora Shaw, who switched early on from seeking another four-year term to opting for a two-year term. Shaw received 1,555 votes and Barber, 1,487.
Four-term Councilman Rex Woodhouse chose not to run again. That left two four-year seats open that will be filled by Everett Kelepolo, a Spanish Fork High School coach and top vote getter with 1,939 votes; and Lil Shepherd, past president of the Icelandic Association of Utah. She captured 1,632 votes.
