Two-term Mayor Marie Huff, who set a standard for having an open door policy, found the door shut on her Tuesday as she tried to seek a third term.
The grandmotherly Huff lost to challenger Dale R. Barney as the majority of voters turned their support to him. The final tally for Barney was 1,625 votes to Huff's 1,477. Barney beat her in the primary as well, but she vowed to come back by campaigning harder.Barney said during his campaign he intended to involve residents in local government. He believes in committees to help make major decisions.
Huff leaves a legacy of rapid, but organized growth with a new general plan and zoning ordinances to guide future development. Earlier this year she was honored by Gov. Mike Leavitt with the prestigious Elected Official of the Year 1996 award.
City Councilman Matt Barber, with 1,487 votes, lost to City Councilwoman Thora Shaw, with 1,555 votes, in a race for a two-year seat after Shaw opted not to seek her four-year seat again. Other council winners were Everett Kelepolo, a Spanish Fork High coach and top vote getter; and Lil Shepherd, past president of the Icelandic Association of Utah.
