Voters used pens instead of punchers Tuesday and elected two write-in candidates to the Town Council.

Erick Cox won a four-year seat on the council, and Steve Allred landed a two-year seat. Neither of them appeared on the ballot.Incumbent Mayor Elizabeth Johnson and Councilman Brad Sears were the only two candidates whose names were on the ballot. Both easily won re-election.

A few weeks ago, it seemed like the Cedar Hills election would go down in history as one of the quietist. Johnson faced no opposition and Sears was running against no one for three empty Town Council seats.

But residents showed up at the polls and voted for what was likely the most write-in candidates in the town's history.

"It was different from anything I've ever seen," said Johnson after the votes were tallied. "I suppose people just wrote whatever came to mind."

Residents voted for more than 30 different candidates in all, according to an unofficial count. Roy Leek received nearly 50 votes in the mayoral race, but that didn't come close to Johnson's 222. Council write-in candidates Brian Salmond and Bobbie Miller received nearly 80 votes apiece.

The rest of the candidates received anywhere from one to 10 votes.
