Dr. Henry Heimlich, creator of the Heimlich maneuver used to clear the windpipe of choking victims, was hospitalized after collapsing at a party celebrating his son's re-election to the City Council.

Heimlich, 77, slumped in his chair but was conscious and apparently alert when he was rushed to Deaconess Hospital, said witnesses at the victory party Tuesday night for Heimlich's son, Phil.Heimlich was in stable condition this morning. Details of his illness will not be released, said Cathy Jones, a nursing supervisor at Deaconess Hospital. A broadcast report said Heimlich may have had a diabetic seizure.
