Notebook: When was the last time this late in the season that BYU quarterbacks had thrown more interceptions than touchdowns? The Cougars have been picked off 10 times while going airborne nine times for TDs . . . BYU dropped out of the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll after last week's 14-3 defeat at UTEP . . . An opening-drive field goal against the Miners - the Cougars' sole score of the evening - upped BYU's ongoing record of 283 consecutive games without being shut out . . . BYU has a league-best six-game WAC home winning streak . . . With a victory, coach LaVell Edwards would tie former Michigan coach Bo Schembechler for eighth place among all-time Div. 1 coaches, with 234.

Watch for: An offense sorely needing to get untracked . . . The Cougars, who have started three different quarterbacks so far this season, may have a quick-healing Kevin Feterik back.

Notebook: Freshman QB Michael Wall is 2-0 as a starter this season . . . Tailback Charlie Higgins was named Mountain Division player of the week after last weekend's victory over Utah, during which he rushed 30 times for 175 yards and two touchdowns . . . Free safety Levi Gillen was named defensive player of the week for registering 14 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery against the Utes.

Watch for: Tulsa had two of the three latest Mountain Division player-of-the-week honorees: tailback Charlie Higgins rushed 30 times for a career-tying 175 yards and two touchdowns, and free safety Levi Gillen tallied 14 tackles, picked off two passes and recovered a fumble. Gillen leads the league in tackles per game with a 15.6 average.

Watch for: Scott Shields didn't kick a field goal last week for only the second time this year. He missed his only try, from 49 yards out, breaking a string of 11 straight . . . Can quarterback Steve Buck bounce back after being replaced by John Fassel last week?

Sick bay: DE Jim Slaugh, an eight-game starter, suffered a torn medial collateral ligament . . . DT Santos Carrillo anb DE Brian Edmisten both saw action last week, returning from injuries.

Notebook: The Hornets have lost two overtime games this year, to UC-Davis and Cal State Northridge . . . Coach John Volek feels his team has been in every game but one (a 52-10 loss to Montana) . . . The Hornets are 117th out of 118 teams in total defense in I-AA.

Watch for: Freshman running back Charles Roberts (5-6, 175) is 6th in the league in rushing at 64 yards per game . . . Tyrone Taylor, son of former USU running back Altie Taylor, leads the Big Sky in kickoff returns and has 26 receptions for 415 yards.

Notebook: SUU finished with a 4-1 home record but is only 1-3 on the road . . . T-birds snapped a three-loss skid with last week's 37-27 homecoming win over UC Davis . . . Brook Madsen needs 52 rushing yards to break the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight season. Teammate Matt Cannon is just 182 yards shy of the same mark.

Watch for: Senior quarterback Joe DuPaix earned 1-AA Independent player-of-the-week honors for his performance last week against UC Davis. DuPaix rushed for a career-high 218 yards and one touchdown. He had runs of 39, 45, 46 and 55 yards . . . SUU held UC Davis to 26 rushing yards. The T-Birds have been among the nation's leaders in run defense all season, currently ranking 22nd in Div. 1-AA . . . The T-Birds have registered 13 sacks over the last three games.

Northern Iowa (5-4)

Nickname: Panthers

Notebook: UNI has been a staple in Division I-AA postseason action for the past seven seasons . . . The Panthers are not only undefeated at home in three games this season but are 109-27-1 since the UNI-Dome opened 21 years ago.
