An American Embassy official suspected by Austrian police of being involved in tapping the telephone of a senior North Korea official in Vienna has been sent home.

Without verifying reports in Austria that the unidentified American was involved and was detained briefly by police, State Department spokesman James P. Rubin said Wednesday "we agree with the Austrian government that in light of the allegations that have been made, it is best that he not remain in Austria."Rubin declined to identify the embassy official, and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright dismissed a question about the report at a news conference.
