Brian Sutter could have told his brother, Duane, that losing is no fun.
Duane Sutter got his chance to coach the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night, moving up from his assistant's role when coach Doug MacLean began serving a two-game suspension.But the Panthers dropped their third in a row at home, 4-2 to the New Jersey Devils.
"It's not a fairy tale come true," said Duane Sutter, who coached three years in the IHL.
Later in the evening, Calgary - coached by Brian Sutter - lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3. The Flames fell to 3-10-3.
"People have to start looking in the mirror and being accountable," Brian Sutter said. "Some guys just don't want to pay the price enough. We have a lot of guys that do, but all you need is a few who don't to kill you."
In all, six Sutter brothers played in the NHL. Darryl Sutter coaches the San Jose Sharks, who did not play Wednesday.
MacLean was suspended for running toward referee Dennis LaRue following an overtime loss to Buffalo last Saturday. He was also fined $5,000 and forfeited two games' pay, about $15,000.
Panthers goalie John Vanbiesbrouck stopped 31 shots in his first game back after sitting out the last three with a strained hamstring, but that wasn't enough.
Devils' Scott Niedermayer scored two goals and Randy McKay one.
Maple Leafs 4, Flames 3
Wendel Clark scored the tiebreaking goal at 5:28 of the third period as Toronto won on the road. The Maple Leafs have won only four games this season, three against Calgary.
Rangers 4, Avalanche 2
Wayne Gretzky had a goal and two assists as New York won at Colorado. The Avalanche became the last team in the NHL to lose at home (4-1-4) this season.
Joe Sakic, who signed a $21 million offer sheet with the Rangers before Colorado matched it in August, was held without a point for only the fourth time this season.

Teemu Selanne scored two goals in the third period as host Anaheim extended Tampa Bay's winless streak to a team-record 10 games (0-9-1).
Selanne, second in the league with 13 goals, has scored goals in eight straight games.
