In the Sunday (Oct. 26) sports section of the Deseret News, Jody Genessy accused the Brighton girls soccer team of poor sportsmanship because of its actions after winning the state championship. By his own admission, Genessy did not attend the game about which he wrote. The song he complained about is a song that has been part of their warmup and celebration all year and certainly not intended to offend anyone. Genessy also complained that the Brighton soccer players, when taking their victory lap, "stopped in front of the Alta fans and did some more chanting, finger waving and posturing."

Since Genessy did not attend the game, he had no way of knowing that there were numerous Brighton fans on the so-called "Alta side." Those fans included my husband and son, the father and brother of one of the Brighton starters. Naturally, the Brighton players wanted to greet all of their fans, not just some of them. Doing so by holding up the #1 sign with their fingers does not seem like such a terrible thing, since they are #1.It is neither wise nor responsible journalism to listen to hearsay about a game that one did not attend, jump to erroneous conclusions, and then write a newspaper article professing those conclusions as truth. You owe both the Brighton soccer team and Coach Kathy Kuhn an apology, Mr. Genessy.
