A new giant solar flare is expected to have only minor effects on Earth, scientists say.
A solar flare is a strong release of energy, occurring this time in the southwest corner of the sun.The eruption, several times larger than the size of the Earth, was detected early Tuesday morning by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Environment Center in Boulder, Colo.
Forecasters at the center expect the Earth's magnetic field to be affected over the next few days, peaking Friday.
