On Thursday alone, Time received about 200,000 letters, postcards and e-mails supporting the nomination of the founder of modern Turkey. The deluge of mail from his fans has forced the letters department to request two extra staffers.Ataturk, who died in 1938, is revered by Turks for military and diplomatic victories that established Turkey as a republic. Although he governed as a virtual dictator, he campaigned against illiteracy, outlawed polygamy and gave women the vote.
