The University of Utah has been awarded a grant to study Utah families receiving welfare benefits.

The university's Social Research Institute of the Graduate School of Social Work received the one-year $208,000 grant from the state Department of Workforce Services.The Legislature has mandated the study, which will look at welfare families with severe barriers and how they will be impacted by the three-year lifetime limit on public assistance.

The three-year lifetime limit began Jan. 1, 1997.
