A barefoot Buddhist monk dressed in a Yamabushi, a mountain dwelling practitioner outfit, walks over burning-hot ground Sunday during the annual walking-over-fire festival at Takaosan Temple. The ritual was begun by ascetics at the 1,300-year-old religious structure below Mt. Takao in suburban Tokyo. One hundred monks and several hundred other people participated in the ritual before 10,000 onlookers. They prayed for longevity, traffic safety and world peace.
