The Millard County Jail in Fillmore will be expanded at an estimated cost of $3.2 million.
The 13,000-square-foot addition will accommodate 64 more inmates. Remodeling 6,000 feet of existing space will allow upgrading for visiting and food services.County commissioners want construction to begin by July 1 and the project completed by July 31, 1998.
Sheriff Ed Phillips said the present 42-bed jail is overcrowded but the expansion should handle needs for two decades. Plans call for leasing excess space to house state prisoners until needed for Millard County inmates.
Officials said taxes won't be increased to pay for the project. It will be funded over two years by the county, which has sufficient revenue sources to pay for the construction.
