A Delta Air Lines flight attendant suffered back and hip injuries when a flight into Colorado Springs hit severe turbulence over Gunnison, officials said Thursday night.

Two others aboard the Boeing 737 also suffered minor injuries, said city spokesman Tom Lundstrom. The flight attendant, Charlene Penner, 37, of Park City, Utah, suffered back and hip injuries when Delta Flight 1892 suddenly hit an updraft, said Lundstrom.

Penner was taken to Memorial Hospital, where she was expected to be treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A 10-year-old Colorado Springs boy, Crawford McCarthy, and a woman, whose name and hometown weren't available, were treated at the airport for bumps on the head, Lundstrom said.

"The pilot made an announcement that they would be experiencing some turbulence, and it immediately hit an updraft," Lundstrom said. "They didn't even have time to put on their seat belts."
