High school students representing 37 teams nationwide square off in the 16th annual United States Academic Decathlon under way in St. George. Students are tested in essay, fine arts, language, literature, math, science, social science, speech and interview skills. The theme of this year's decathlon is "Communication and Culture," with a special emphasis on the Information Revolution. Students compete in teams of nine, composed of three students who have "A" averages in school, three who have "B" averages and three who have "C" averages. Utah's representatives, who attend Brighton High School, are Brian Harrow, Gary Robinson, John Steed, Max Freeman, Spencer Meibos, Meijken Westenkow, Jared Turner, Mike Vanderhooft and Chris Zamora.
