Five children, including three 6-year-olds, knocked over scores of gravestones - some nearly two centuries old - at a town cemetery, police said Friday.

In all, 72 stones were upended over the last several weeks at the Main Street Cemetery in this western New England town, causing about $2,000 damage. The oldest stones, weakened over the years, dated to the turn of the 18th century. Many cracked when they were toppled. Two people walking through the cemetery discovered the damage earlier this month. Police identified the children last week with the help of school officials and a witness who saw children in the area.

The older boys will face a juvenile charge of vandalizing cemeteries. Police hoped to arrange counseling for the younger children, who won't be charged.
