The Canyon Fuel Co. of Midvale has filed an application to renew a coal mining permit that will assure continued operation of the Southern Utah Fuel Co. Mine in eastern Sevier County.

The permit renewal involves more than 17,000 acres of coal leases and fee land that have been assigned or deeded to the company.All or part of nearly three dozen sections are on public lands in the Fishlake and Manti-LaSal National Forests while three sections of fee land, containing 680 acres, are owned by Canyon Fuel.

Portals of the SUFCO Mine are in East Spring Canyon near Convulsion Canyon about 30 miles east of Salina.
