WOMEN'S TENNIS: Playing under hot, windy conditions did not bother 30th-ranked BYU, as the Cougars defeated New Mexico 5-3 in Friday's NCAA Regional Championships at Lawrence, Kan.

Eline Chiew, Angela Jewell, Adrien Jenkins and Willy Chan all won their singles matches for the Cougars. Chiew and Jenkins also won in doubles.

MEN'S TENNIS: 51st-ranked Brigham Young defeated 46th-ranked Utah, 4-2, in the first round of the NCAA Region VII Championships Friday in Las Vegas.

Boris Bosnjakovic, Manuel Calvo and Brad McIntosh all notched singles victories for the Cougars.

BYU advances to the semifinal round today against the winner of Southern California-UTEP match.

WOMEN'S GOLF: With all five of BYU's golfers shooting 77 or better for the first time this season, the Cougars shot a 299 - the 10th-best round of the day - to jump from 19th to 16th after two rounds at the NCAA West Regional tournament Friday in Tucson, Ariz.

The Cougars' two-round total of 607 puts them just four strokes out of 14th and just 10 strokes away from the coveted 11th spot that would qualify them for the NCAA championships.

Freshman Fredrika Schlasberg led the way for the Cougars, shooting a career-best 73 to bring her two-round total to 153. Junior Susanne Gillemo recorded a 75 to go with Thursday's 74 for a total of 149 and a tie for 37th, the best overall score and placement for a BYU golfer. Sophomore Jamie Stevenson's 76 leaves her tied with Schlasberg at 153. Junior Catalina Navarro matched her first-round 77 on Friday and stands at 153. Merrilyn Gibbs' 75 was also a career-best for her and she came in at 157.

The tournament concludes today.

Utah

SWIMMING: Dennis Tesch, men's swim coach at the University of Utah for the last four years, has been named director of swimming at the U.

Tesch will oversee both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams in his new position. Two assistant coaches will be hired under the new structure.

Utah State

SOFTBALL: USU closed out the 1997 season by splitting a pair of games with Sacramento State, falling 3-0 in the opener before coming back to take the nightcap 5-4 in eight innings.

Susie Bugliarello held Utah State in check in the first game, giving up only four hits while striking out five.

Sacramento State pushed across the only run it would need in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Stacy Himes.

In the second game, Utah State's Teresa Leveque, who was 3-for-4 in the game, singled to lead off the eighth and moved to second on a sacrifice by Emily Wilson. Tara Thompson then took care of the rest, singling home Leveque with the game winner.

Southern Utah

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Jeff Monaco, Arizona's Gatorade Player of the Year in 1997, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Southern Utah University.

The 6-0 point guard averaged 23 points, 8.1 assists and 3.9 steals per game at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale. Monaco started all four years at CHS and earned three 4A all-state honors along the way. He leaves CHS with a school-record 2,024 points and 836 career assists.
