When Ben Lomond played Sky View in Smithfield a few weeks ago, the Bobcats narrowly pulled out the win to stay unbeaten.
"They're a good team and they deserve to be number one," Ben Lomond coach Donnie Greenfield said. "But it was real close up there. We knew that we could play with them."Friday in Ogden, the Scots proved their coach right with a 2-1 shootout win.
Tyler Grinchley scored the game winner for the Scots in sudden death with a blast that just cleared the hands of a diving Bobcats goalie and sailed into the left side of the net. Grinchley also scored Ben Lomond's only regulation goal.
Not surprisingly, the sudden-death shootout win wasn't without controversy.
After ending the regular shootout with three goals each, Sky View and Ben Lomond lined up for sudden death. The Cats' shot was blocked and Grinchley powered his shot home with the game on the line. After his shot, Sky View coach Doyle Geddes threw a fit.
Geddes figured the sudden death would have more than one round of kicks. After consulting the rule book, though, the officials disagreed and ended the Bobcats' perfect season.
Sky View already had the Region 5 title wrapped up, but now heads into the state playoffs following a loss instead of riding a 12-game win streak. The Scots improve to 9-3 with the win.
