If the only issue facing the UTA board was the construction of light rail, the latest round of dissatisfaction with the general manager would be completely out of order. However, if we open the lens of what appears to be a very myopic camera, the view changes considerably. An enlarged view of the picture includes no one standing on the tracks to block light rail, but Mr. Pingree hiding behind it.
This is the same general manager who after the defeat of a poorly worded ballot proposition, the one that led people to think that they were voting "to build or not to build" rather than "to tax or not to tax," ignored the will of the people and spearheaded the effort to build it anyway. It is also the same person who, without informing his employers, lobbied the Legislature to rewrite board appointment laws more to his own liking. It is the same manager who, while boasting of his cost-effective management, holds a $1,000,000 annuity and $196,000 salary and benefit package and has a 25 percent to 30 percent turnover rate in employees.
