The Italian Cabinet on Friday drafted a law to allow the son of the last king to return from a 50-year exile but said the move was not an attempt to dismiss the past.

If the bill is passed, Vittorio Emanuele, 59, will be allowed home after being forced into exile with his father, King Umberto II, as a 9-year-old.The cabinet said in a statement that the draft bill, which must be passed by both houses of parliament, was not an attempt to rewrite history.

Italians threw out their monarchy in 1946 in favor of a republic, blaming them for complicity with more than 20 years of fascist rule under dictator Benito Mussolini.
