The last time Snow Canyon and Lehi met in a game with state playoff ramifications, SC eliminated the Pioneers from the 1996 state football playoffs and Matt Hickman, Brock Jacobsen and Barry Sorenson had a lot to do with it.
In Saturday's first round of the 1997 3A double-elimination state baseball tournament, the threesome haunted the Pioneers one more time as they hit and pitched the Warriors to a 9-7 victory.Hickman was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, Jacobsen was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI and he earned the save, while Sorenson was 2-for-4 from the plate as well as earning the victory on the mound, despite a rough seventh inning, when Lehi made the game interesting.
Trailing 9-2 and with two outs, the Pioneers recorded seven straight base hits that included an RBI single by Dusty Barnes, a two-run triple by Braden Cooper and a two-run homer by Randy Barnes to cut the lead to 9-7. Jason Yates and Trent College singled following Barnes' homer to put runners on first and third, but Jacobsen got Jason Childs to fly out to end the contest.
"We relaxed a little bit and didn't do a good job of execution," Snow Canyon coach Bill Jacobsen said. "Barry pitched well, but his problem was he couldn't get his curve ball over for a strike (in the last inning). I knew that and wanted to go to Brock two hitters earlier, but we had two outs."
SC's Tyler Comer had doubles in the first and third innings for three RBIs to lift the Warriors to the early 3-0 lead. A Jacobsen two-run single and a Hickman RBI double fueled a four-run SC fourth to increase its lead to 7-0.
Lehi scored a run in the fourth and another in the fifth on a Rusty Barnes single before exploding for the five runs in the seventh to make it close.
SC's Kyle Graff had an RBI ground out in the sixth inning and it proved to be the game winner. Jacobsen accounted for SC's final run with a RBI double in the seventh.
Nate Nelson went 4-for-4 and Cooper was 2-for-4 with two triples.
In other state action:
Dixie 15, Delta 3: Mason Wells and Doug Jolley belted three-run homers and Larry Greeley added a homer also as the No. 1-ranked Flyers pounded Delta. Dixie scored 14 of its runs in the fourth fifth and sixth innings.
Pine View 8, Union 5: The Panthers broke a 5-all tie with three runs in the top of the seventh to edge Region 10 winner Union. Union scored all of its runs in the sixth inning. Josh Milne and Tyler Campbell hit homers for PV and Erik Feldstead had a three-run homer for the Cougars.
Carbon 9, Emery 3: Ben Jewkes fired a complete-game four-hitter and Jarod Timothy had four RBIs to lead the Dinos past the Spartans.
