The 14th ranked University of Utah softball team used timely hitting in the opener and an offensive onslaught in the night cap to sweep a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader from San Diego State on Saturday at Ute Field.
The twinbill concluded the regular season for both teams.Utah (42-16, 22-10 WAC) assured itself of a third-place finish in the league and solidified an NCAA Tournament bid. San Diego State (30-30, 14-18 WAC) finished sixth in the conference and reached the 30-win plateau for the second time in school history.
Utah rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the opener, 3-2. The Utes opened the scoring with a run in the second, while the Aztecs came back with one in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The Utes plated two in the bottom of the sixth as Cindy Bennett cracked her seventh home run of the year to left field with one out to account for the tying run. After Pam Slade drew a walk, Karen Bono drilled a double to center that scored April Churchill, who was a pinch runner for Slade.
The second game was no contest as Utah scored six runs in the first inning en route to a 17-1 victory.
Michelle Larzabal had a two run home run and three hits for the Utes.
