Garth Oland Sargent passed away peacefully at the age of 77, surrounded by his loving family in a Salt Lake City hospital, after a long three month courageous battle with respiratory problems from pneumonia.

He fought long and hard to the very end. Dad was born on August 21, 1919 in Coalville, Utah to Willard and Vivian Davies Sargent. Garth married his sweetheart, Jeane Holder on November 13, 1946 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They recently enjoyed celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary in St. George, Utah with all their children and grandchildren. Garth and Jeane have spent the last 17 winters enjoying golfing, family and friends in the St. George area. Garth, and his wife, served a mission for the LDS Church in the New Mexico Mission from 1986-1987. Garth humbly accepted the calls to serve on the High Council, as Bishop of the Hoytsville Ward, Sunday School President, YM President and various other callings. He was a Veteran of World War II, stationed in England. He was a successful sheepman, proud of his immaculate fields, and loved the outdoors and deer hunting. Dad worked for International Harvester in his early years and then for Brown Equipment Company. He worked for Crandall-Walker Motors and then retired from Crandall Ford-Mercury, where he earned several top Sales Awards. Garth loved to spend time with his family at their cabin and during elk and deer hunting seasons enjoyed telling stories enjoyed by all. He also used to say while at the cabin, "Well boys, this is the life."Garth's greatest accomplishment was the union with his beloved "lady", Jeane and his four children: Brad (Jodie) Sargent; Layne (Pearl) Sargent; Kathy (David) Peck; Tracy (Jill) Sargent, all Hoytsville; his 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren made him proud to be a grandpa.

Dad delighted in catching the grandkids and holding them on his lap and telling them about the Cougarutes, and before they could get off, they had to say "Grandpa sweet honey, Baby, turn me loose quick." If they could they could get off from his lap. All of his family will miss him deeply. Jeane was dad's greatest treasure. She is the brightest star in his sky. She has worked with him, played golf with him and very diligently and lovingly cared for him throughout his life.

Garth is also survived by sisters, Pauline (Fred) Jardine, Rexburg, Idaho; Belva Gunderson, San Diego, California. Preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 13, 1997 at 1 p.m. in the Hoytsville LDS Chapel, Hoytsville, Utah. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 6-8 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Interment, Hoytsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Hoytsville 2nd LDS Ward Missionary Fund.

"And now we say, Go rest high on that mountain, 'cause Garth, your work on earth is done. We love you sweetheart, dad, and grandpa."
