In the village of Abiz, Alireza Rayee, 32, was pulled from the rubble barely conscious Sunday, after being trapped for 27 hours. Rayee's rescue was a rare example of joy across northeastern Iran. All of the village's 700 mud houses were destroyed. One-third of its 1,200 people were killed, villagers said. (See story on Page A4.)
