Earthquake survivors carry a body on a makeshift stretcher in Ardakul, Iran, Sunday. The earthquake, which struck Saturday, killed at least 2,400 people. In the village of Abiz, Alireza Rayee, 32, was pulled from the rubble barely conscious Sunday, after being trapped for 27 hours. Rayee's rescue was a rare example of joy across northeastern Iran. All of the village's 700 mud houses were destroyed. One-third of its 1,200 people were killed, villagers said. (See story on Page A4.)
