Australian long-distance champion Susie Maroney, 22, dives into the water from the Malecon area of Havana, Cuba, in an effort to become the first person ever to complete the 112-mile swim from Cuba to Florida. There have been 50 official attempts. Maroney herself came the closest, covering 107 miles in 381/2 hours last June. She reached shark-infested U.S. territorial waters, but because of seasickness and dehydration she was pulled from the sea 12 miles short of her goal.

  1. Fewer comments automatically sent to moderation (we hope).
  2. Lower tolerance for uncivil comments. If you encounter a warning that your comment will be sent to moderation, try revising before you submit for the best chance of approval.
