Salt Lake's Board of Adjustment approved a parking plan Monday for a new LDS Church assembly building that will bring Delta Center-size crowds downtown.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans to build a 26,000-seat assembly building on the block north of Temple Square. The building will be used for general and regional conferences and other cultural events. The church plans to build a 1,400-stall underground parking lot onsite and use other parking facilities it controls downtown to meet the rest of the need for the new building.

Entrance and exit ramps to the proposed underground parking structure are also being designed to channel cars away from Capitol Hill neighborhoods that often absorb overflow downtown parking.

By statute, zoning codes would require 5,200 parking spaces. The plan to spread the parking around is philosophically compatible with the city's downtown master plan but required the Board of Adjustment's approval before the church could proceed.
