Throughout our history there have been times and circumstances that demanded citizens and their leaders take a stand and answer the question, "Which side are you on?" Today, as a conflict between the tobacco industry and the health-care needs of our nation's children draws more attention, that question must be addressed once more.
All Utah residents can be proud that some of our leaders have answered that they're on the side of children. U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch has moved beyond shallow partisanship in order to put the health-care needs of millions of American children ahead of the interests of tobacco companies. While Sen. Hatch and I belong to different political parties, it is clear to me that his ability to move beyond partisanship is something that America needs. But while Sen. Hatch has chosen to side with America's children and families, others have continued their misguided support of the tobacco industry. Utah Sen. Bob Bennett has made that choice. So has Gov. Mike Leavitt.
But what about you and your family? Which side are you on? If you allow yourself to be influenced by the slick national advertising campaign that has been attacking Sen. Hatch (rumored to be funded by the tobacco industry), will you be able to live with your choice down the road?
It may surprise some people that as the Democratic leader of the Utah State Senate I would support Sen. Hatch. Partisan politics aside, I do and always will support what is right, and he is right.
