Shame on you, Craig Larson (Forum, May 7). The idea of putting daylight-saving time on the ballot isn't bad, although why you assume it would lose is beyond me. But your comment about Cyndy McMullin being selfish and self-centered was just plain mean and shows more about your character than hers.
Why do so many of you out there think that daylight-saving time is somehow evil? Do you actually believe that God gave us the time system we have and that it can't be tampered with?As far as adjusting to daylight-saving time, which takes a few days at most, it would seem that you DST opponents are saying that we should never leave our own time zones because we will never adjust. So much for that vacation to Disneyland, the business trip to New York, the mission to Europe, or the move to Illinois, all in different time zones. (On the other hand, if adjusting really is so hard, it would go a long way to explaining what goes on in Washington. After all, most of the people running things there are from different time zones.)
At any rate, whatever the original reasons for DST, I enjoy it now because it's relevant to the way I want to live. I hate being awakened at 4:30 or so by the sun, and I love the extra daylight at night so I feel safer going places and just being outside. If that makes me selfish, so be it, but I'll bet there are many others like me out there. And who's to say that Craig Larson and his ilk aren't the selfish, self-centered ones for wanting to take this enjoyment away from us.
