A variety of pioneer sesquicentennial activities have spurred increased attendance at the Museum of Church History and Art in downtown Salt Lake City.

Visitor numbers totaled 87,866 for the first four months of 1997, with 28,080 of that number during April alone. The figures are the second-best total for the period since the museum opened in 1984, said museum director Glen M. Leonard. He credited the increase to a variety of sesquicentennial exhibits and activities.

Two international art exhibits on pioneering and a display of memorabilia used in past Pioneer Day celebrations are currently being featured at the museum. The museum also sponsors regular pioneer activities days for children, with the next one set for July.

A pioneer lecture series begins Wednesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. and continues May 21, June 4, and June 11.
