A man who suffered third-degree burns while at an acupuncture clinic is suing the business for at least $15,000.
Per Kielland Lund filed a lawsuit against Delu Liu of the Liu Acupuncture Clinic, 264 E. 2100 South, in 3rd District Court on Monday. The lawsuit charges Liu's care was negligent and below standard for state-licensed acupuncturists. Lund, a citizen of Norway and a Salt Lake resident, sought treatment from Liu for vertigo and fatigue, the lawsuit states.
As part of her treatment, Liu placed a moxa roll device containing a lighted moxa stick on each of Lund's legs and then left the room, the complaint states. A moxa is a soft material burned on the skin as a cauterizing agent.
Lund cried for help when the rolls began burning, but Liu did not respond, the lawsuit states. When Liu returned and saw the injury, she allegedly sent Lund home without instructions on how to care for the burns, which have left permanent scarring.
The lawsuit seeks no less than $15,000 in an amount to be proven at trial.
