Tubby Smith, a former Kentucky assistant, was hired to replace Rick Pitino as coach of the Wildcats, becoming the schools' first black coach.

Smith, 45, had a 45-19 record over the past two seasons at Georgia with two NCAA trips. He left Kentucky in 1991 to become coach at Tulsa, where he compiled a 79-43 record in four seasons, including NCAA tournament appearances the last two years. Smith received a five-year contract, but financial terms were not disclosed.
