Veteran women's basketball coach Greg williams, most recently at colorado State, has been named an assistant coach for the Utah Starzz of the new women's NBA.
Williams will join the staff of head coach Denise Taylor. The inaugural WNBA season will open June 21 when the Starzz host the Sacramento Monarchs in the Delta Center.Williams has experience coaching women at both the major college and professional levels. He was an assistant with the Houston Angels of the Women's Professional Basketball League (WPBL) for two years (1979-80) and was the head coach of the Dallas Diamonds of the WPBL in '81. He led the Diamonds to a 27-9 record and a division title. He also coached the Dallas Diamonds in the Women's American Basketball Association in '85. His team posted a 21-2 mark and won the league title.
Williams served an assistant college coach at Rice (1970-75) and Southern Methodist ('83-84). He became a head college coach in '85 at houston, where he led the Cougars to a 93-51 record in five seasons. He coached at CSU from '90 to '97, where his teams went 108-88.
"We re pleased to have Greg join our staff," said Jazz/Starzz general manager Tim Howells. "Greg's experience and his tradition of winning at the highest levels will be a terrific asset to our team. Greg has a deep understanding of the game, both from his experuience as a college coach and as a coach at the professional lefel."
Williams played at Rice, where he was the Southwest Conference Player of the Year in '69.
