Carmack's doughnut junkies will be in withdrawal for an indefinite period.
An early morning fire damaged the Main Street home of Carmack's Donuts, a third-generation bakery in Bountiful famous for its doughnuts and baked treats. The fire started in a grill at the bakery and restaurant, 431 S. Main, just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to Mike Barfuss, assistant chief of the Bountiful Fire Department.
A cook was preparing food for a catered event when a fire flashed over the grill and ignited the area above it, Bar-fuss said. The cook tried unsuccessfully to fight it with an extinguisher but was driven back by the smoke and heat.
Firefighters arrived at 1:15 a.m. and entered the shop but also had to retreat when a false ceiling began collapsing. One firefighter was knocked to his knees but was not injured, Barfuss said.
The fire was under control in about 20 minutes.
Flames damaged the grill area, the ceiling, and charred some roof trusses, Barfuss said. No damage estimate was available.
